Aidan ODriscoll to Retire from AFL

Former 55th Pick to Hang Up Boots

ODriscoll, who was taken with the 55th pick in the 2023 AFL draft, will retire having not played a single game.

The news was announced by the Commission on the Defence Forces on Thursday, with ODriscoll set to take up a new role as Chair of the Board of Ornua, an Irish dairy cooperative.

ODriscoll was appointed Secretary General of the Department of Justice and Equality in 2020, and has since served as Minister Simon Coveney's right-hand man. He is widely respected within government circles, and his appointment to the Ornua Board is seen as a major coup for the organisation.

ODriscoll's decision to retire from AFL is a surprise, as he is still only 21 years old. However, he has admitted that he has struggled to adapt to the physical demands of the game, and that he has decided to focus on his career outside of football.

ODriscoll's retirement is a reminder of the challenges that young players face when trying to make it in the AFL. Not everyone is able to handle the rigors of the game, and ODriscoll's decision to retire is a brave one.

We wish ODriscoll all the best in his future endeavors.
