Bangladesh Coup

Bangladesh’s Military History Shows Its Potential for Political Instability

The 15 August 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a military coup launched by mid-ranking army officers in Bangladesh on 15 August 1975. The coup resulted in the assassination of President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family, and the establishment of a military government led by General Ziaur Rahman.

The 2011 Bangladesh coup d'état attempt was a coup planned for 11-12 January 2012 that was stopped by the Bangladesh Army in December 2011. The coup was allegedly planned by former army officers and politicians, and was intended to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Bangladesh's army has a history of staging coups and counter-coups. However, over the past couple of decades, the military has taken a less overt role in politics. The army chief of Bangladesh is due to address the nation as protests calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation continue.
