Deadly Storms Ravage Houston, Leaving Thousands Without Power
At Least 7 Dead, Extensive Damage Reported
HOUSTON, May 17 - A series of severe storms tore through the Houston area on Thursday and Friday, leaving a trail of destruction and at least 7 people dead. The storms also left nearly 1 million Texans without power, according to local officials. The storms brought high winds, tornadoes, and heavy rain, causing widespread flooding and damage.
Debris Piles Up, Classes Canceled
Debris filled feeder roads near major highways in Houston, and school officials canceled classes in the city on Friday. Photos shared by residents and officials showed extensive damage from tornadoes and flooding, including downed trees, damaged homes, and overturned vehicles. An EF-1 tornado reportedly struck a Houston suburb early Wednesday morning.
Disaster Declaration Issued
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo issued a disaster declaration for the county on Thursday, allowing the county to access state and federal resources to assist with the recovery efforts. The county is also working with local organizations to provide assistance to those affected by the storms.
